Designed by Kris Lin and Jiayu Yang, Tanyue Mansion is a testament to the aesthetic and literary development of the Song Dynasty, a high point in the history of Chinese literature. The design draws inspiration from the works of Su Shi, a renowned poet of the era. His famous piece, Sudi Chunxiao, which describes the landscape of the West Lake in Hangzhou, is beautifully integrated into the interior space of the mansion.
The unique property of Tanyue Mansion lies in its innovative use of space. The designers redefine the concept of walls, transforming them from opaque space-defining elements into transparent and luminous features imbued with traditional Chinese culture. This creative approach sets Tanyue Mansion apart from other designs, showcasing the strength and uniqueness of the project.
The mansion, spanning 1013 square meters, is divided into two zones. Zone A is the Beauty Museum of Song Dynasty, focusing on Oriental art culture and Song Dynasty aesthetics. Zone B serves as a tea club, with its design elements reflected in the lobby design and tea bar. The overall design style is contemporary with an Oriental flavor, achieved through the use of modern materials such as silver hole stone Mosaic for the folding screen, presenting Chinese traditional culture in a woven fabric texture.
One of the major challenges faced during the design process was the ceiling design, which was accomplished using the traditional process of seal. Decorated by hanging scrolls, the ceiling forms a full Sudi Chunxiao, with each word represented by a Chinese seal. This innovative approach to space definition and design elements resulted in a unique blend of indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a cultural atmosphere that integrates traditional aesthetics with modern design.
In recognition of its exceptional design, Tanyue Mansion was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. This prestigious accolade is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, advancing art, science, design, and technology, and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
With its unique blend of traditional aesthetics and modern design, Tanyue Mansion stands as a testament to the enduring influence of the Song Dynasty on contemporary Chinese culture and design. It serves as a beacon of cultural preservation and innovation, inviting visitors to explore and appreciate the rich history and aesthetics of the Song Dynasty.
